Sahuayo, Mexico, March 28 1913 – February 10, 1928

José Luis Sanchez Del Rio was born in Sahuayo, Michoacan (Mexico), March 28 1913 by parents Macario Sánchez, María del Río. Visiting the tomb of the blessed martyr Anacleto González Flores, he asked God to die in defense of the faith. Just fourteen, José Luis was murdered February 10, 1928, during the religious persecution in Mexico, as belonging to the Cristeros, a large Catholic group that was opposed to the oppression of President Plutarco Elías Calles regime.

One year before the martyrdom of José Luis, he had joined the Cristeras of General Prudencio Mendoza, whose base was at the village of Cotija. The tragic event attended by two children, respectively, seven and nine years, which in future would religious congregations. One of them was Father Marcial Maciel, founder of the Legionaries of Christ, born in Cotija, which in the interview-book “Mi Vida es Cristo” ( “My life is Christ”) revealed the decisive role for his vocation was witnessing the death of martyred little friend. “He was arrested by the forces of government, which wanted to give an exemplary punishment on the civilian population that supported the Cristeros” said the founder who was just seven years old at the time. “They asked him to renounce his faith in Christ under the threat of the death penalty. José did not accept apostasy. His mother was torn from the penalty and by anxiety, but his son said. Then they peeled the soles of the feet and the obligation to walk in the country, on the road to the cemetery. He cried and moaned in pain, but not sold. From time to time he stopped and said: If you shout, ‘Christ the King dies’ it will save lives. Tell them ‘Christ the King will die’. But he replied: ‘Long live Christ the King’. Reaching the cemetery, before he was shot, they asked him for the last time if he wanted to deny his faith. And he did not so they killed him right there. He died then by shouting, like many other Mexican martyrs: ‘Christ the King lives!’. These are indelible images from my memory and the memory of the Mexican people, although there is no mention of them in official history. “

The other eyewitness was a child of nine years, Enrique Amezcua Medina, who later founded the Priestly Confraternity of Workers of the Kingdom of Christ, now present in both houses of formation in Mexico, Spain and several other countries around the world. In the biography of the Brotherhood he founded, Father Amezcua remembered his providential meeting with José Luis Sanchez Del Rio. As stated in that testimony, he knew the child martyr which proved decisive for his choice of priests. He then created the “Seminary of Christ the King” on Salvatierra for the Training of Workers, whose internship was dedicated to “José Luis”. The mortal remains of José Luis Sanchez Del Rio, still resting in the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in his hometown, became a pilgrimage site.

The martyrdom of the victims of religious persecution caused by the new Mexican Constitution of 1917, was approved on June 22, 2004 by Pope John Paul II and he was beatified on November 20, 2005, under Pope Benedict XVI, with the ceremony presided by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints Cardinal José Saraiva Martins in Guadalajara in Mexico.

Truly he was a martyr. Like the case of St. Tarcisus during the Roman Empire and St.Peter Yu Tae Chol( One of the 103 martyrs of Korea.

  3. lee says:

  4. Jannete says:

    why did he die?

    • Alexa Orozco says:

when he was giving ammo to one of the soldiers during the Cristero War, he realized the general’s horse was shot dead, and at the cost of his life, gave him his own horse and a few moments later he was caught and brought to a church, also know as his current prison, he was put in a sacred room and found roosters inside there and he then screamed ” This is a sacred place not a farmhouse! ” and snapped all of the roosters’ necks. this got the soldiers mad and decided that he should die. On his way to his execution his tortures cut off the soles of his feet and made him walk on salt, but he didn’t give in and kept screaming, ” Vive Christo Rey!” which means, ‘ Long live Christ Our King! ‘. The soldiers told him if he said ‘ Death to Christ the King, he would be freed from his execution, but he didn’t give in and kept screaming, ” Vive Christo Rey! ” They later stabbed him with machetes and he kept screaming, one of the soldiers got so mad he shot him without a trial

I received a Glory Story about Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio. When I was researching more information about him, I learned that Fr. Marciel was only 7 years old at the time, and his family had moved, so he probably did not witness the torture and death of Blessed Jose as he describes. I am not saying it didn’t happen, just that Fr. Marciel is a fraud.
    From Wikipedia:
“Recently it has been discovered that Maciel’s family left Michoacan in 1927 to escape from Cristero War and went to Jalisco. Maciels came back to Michoacan in 1929. It is plausible that Maciel, whose age was seven, followed his family and was not present at José’s killing.”

    • Cecilia Licudine says:

Jalisco is not that far. The execution was attended by many, and it is possible that he was present on that day.

  6. hannah says:

Fr. Maciel was no fraud. He knew Jose and was present at his killing. It must have been very hard to watch a friend be so brutally tortured and in turn murdered, but then what did James and John witness on Calvary.

  7. Pablo H. says:

Pray for the soul of Fr. Maciel.

Santa María de Guadalupe Esperanza nuestra, salva nuestra patria y conserva nuestra Fe.

In my opinion, the fraud is what people says about Fr. Maciel. I don’t think he was the bad guy.

Jose was my grandmother first cousin. She use to tell me his story when I was a child. The man that sentenced him to death was his Godfather, previously a catholic. My grandmothers story went that he was to be executed by gunfire beside a water hole, do in case the bullets didn’t kill him, he would drown. When they reached the waterhole it was dry. Never had the towns people ever seen it dry, and it drying overnight scared his Godfather. The execution was put off, soliders were ordered to fill it. The next day, another attempt was made, same thing, the water hole was dry. The towns people started to call it a miracle, and non-believers started to believe. So out of anger his Godfather proceeded with the execution. The story continues to this day. It is said that the waterhole still remains dry except on the day of his execution. I hope to one day visit this place so my Grandmothers story can come to life for me.

I love miracle stories because my faith grows. This story about the waterhole confirms Jose Sanchez Del Rio is a saint. Jesus was with him on the day of his death. I will share it with my St. Augustine middle school boys and girls and we will pray daily to St. Jose Sanchez Del Rio.

I just saw the movie “for greater glory” I pray it will change the lives of many who forget our Divino Cristo Rey.

I just saw the movie ” for greater glory”, it made me aware of the story of St. Jose Sanchez del Rio. He really deserves to be a saint. Viva Cristo Rey!

  15. In the movie, you see Jose walking in great pain; he leaves blood on the pathway. His feet are bloody from the torture he received. For an instant, you can almost see the parallel of Christ himself, walking the Via Dolorosa. It is very moving.

  16. Linda Perry says:

I saw For Greater Glory and was educated about a war i heard nothing about, I cannot stop thinking about Blessed Jose. It is no coincidince that this movie comes out at a time when our religious conscience is being steped on by our American Government.

  17. Margaret Johnson says:

Viva Cristo Rey! I too just saw For Greater Glory with 3 friends. It is a story all should see. Many saints died for our religious freedom- we must stand up for what they gave their lives for. I also have found my new Saint- Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio– and I have had a sore foot since March! Now I can bear it! Viva Cristo Rey!! I will write this on my car window tomorrow for all to read.

  18. pablothemexican says:

For Greater Glory is a Freemason production.

The scene where the Jew Plutarco Calles and the General meet is blasphemous.

To put a crucifix in a shot glass of Tequila then drink from it is a blasphemy.

Cristeros do not stand to receive Holy Communion either.

And the story of Blessed Jose is not accurate.

    Go to you tube.

In the search bar type 469fitter (no spaces).

There among other videos, you will find two videos of Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio.

Filmed by a Traditional Roman Catholic, it tells the story of his martyrdom.

The well into which they dunked the Cristeros is considered to now be Holy Water. It is given away free at the graveyard.

And, the San Santiago Church sells the images of Blessed Jose as he is depicted in the Church laying in state.

    Viva Cristo Rey!

I do not understand your comment ….. Jewish freemasons? And yes White Christmas does not have anything to do with Christ but where does that fit in?
I have watched this movie and it touched me very deeply seeing what Blessed Jose ( a child) went through for his Faith. I do not know about the crucifix in a shot glass of Tequila then drink from it being blasphemy. But I do not believe that the producer of this movie, Pablo Jose Barroso, is a Jewish freemason, I also do not know why, if this scene is blasphemy, I have not heard any other Catholic who has watched the movie speak of it. Anyway I do not know if it was blasphemy or not, although I pray that it is not. All I know is that the Lord touched my spirit very much through watching the Faith of this child who was martyred for the sake of Christ Church. He was an amazing child and I pray that the Lord will bless me with even a small amount of the Faith that he had.

Take care Angel and God bless and watch over you.
