The Difference Between Dominicans and Jesuits

Two men considering a religious vocation were having a conversation. “What is similar about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders? ” the one asked.

The second replied, “Well, they were both founded by Spaniards — St. Dominic for the Dominicans, and St. Ignatius of Loyola for the Jesuits. They were also both founded to combat heresy — the Dominicans to fight the Albigensians, and the Jesuits to fight the Protestants.”

“What is different about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders?”

“Met any Albigensians lately?”

    I heard it like this:

A student was discerning his vocation and asked a priest to help out. The priest said , “Well, you got your Jesuits, your Franciscans, and your Dominicans…”

“How do I know which is the best one?” the student asked.

“The Jesuits were started to combat the Protestants, the Franciscans to battle poverty, and the Dominicans to fight the Albigensians, Waldensians, and Cathars,” said the priest.

The student asked again, “So….. how do I know which is the best and which one to join?”

“When was the last time you saw a Cathar, a Waldensian, or an Albigensian?”

Waldensians are still around in Italy.

  3. Sister Mary says:

Unfortunately around Prouilhe, the Cradle of the Order, it’s big business to be ” Cathar Country” and catharism is again attracting “converts”.

I believe that the above picture is the Hinnebush family. Yes?

Perhaps you would consider our community for Vocations Tuesday? http://www.nunsopsummit.org.

  4. Sister Mary Catharine,

It looks like the Dominicans need to set up some more houses in Prouilhe!

I am not sure WHO the Dominicans are in the photo… Can you tell us more about the family you mention?

I already have plans to include the good sisters in a Vocations Tuesday spot in the next few months!

Please keep the readership and writers of The Black Cordelias in your prayers.

Incorrect. The Jesuits were founded during a time of protestant upheaval, but Ignatius was fairly ignorant of it at the time.
