Constantine: I am always startled when I see the utter disrespect that Roman Catholics pay to the Old Testament. After all, those were “the Scriptures” that Jesus affirmed, down to every pen stroke (Matthew 5:17-21).
So when you wrote, “And, there is no Scripture that demands that the title Rock can only be applied to God” you showed my suspicions to be true! The entire Old Testament demands that the title Rock be applied only to God.
Here are just a few examples:
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? Psalm 18:31
Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.” Isaiah 44:8
“There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. 1 Samuel 2:2
So just in these three example, we have David, the prophet Isaiah and the prophet Samuel saying exactly that the title “Rock” can only mean God!

I did not say that Rock in the OT does not refer to God, which is what your OT Quotes show. I agree with you and the OT, that in the OT Rock is one of the names of God. While the OT uses Rock to refer to God there is nowhere in Scripture that demands that Rock can ONLY & ALWAYS refer to God. You are interpreting these passages as demands but they don’t say that explicitly. In fact in the New Testament Jesus changes Simon’s name to ROCK.
Constantine: You remember how often Jesus cited the book of Deuteronomy, don’t you bfhu? He quoted it more than any other book in the Bible. Does Deuteronomy say that Peter is the “rock”?

BFHU: These are great quotes. I don’t dispute them. I never said that the Rock in the OT referred to Peter. It refers to God.
Constantine: So, only the Roman Catholic Church, taking only one example from the New Testament which was unknown to the Apostles and Christ, Incarnate, takes God’s rightful title away from Him and gives it to a man. That strikes me as a blasphemy.
BFHU: Well it would be blasphemy if mere men “took God’s rightful title away from Him and gave it to a man.” But, Jesus is the one Who changed Simon’s name to ROCK. God is very generous.

Mary the Mother of Jesus, and the Unforgiveable Sin
Mark 3:20-35
Jesus’ remarks about the unforgiveable sin are inserted in the middle of a passage about Jesus’ family coming to take charge of Him, and take Him home. Jesus has begun his preaching ministry, healing people, and traveling around the Northern side of the Sea of Galilee. The crowds are so large that He is in danger of being trampled, so He asks His disciples to get him a boat to preach from. But He can’t stay on the boat 24/7; and here He has come to someone’s house to have supper. But even in the house he is swarmed with invading people, so much so that He and the disciples can’t eat.
Jesus’ family has heard about the crowds, and they believe Jesus has lost His mind. They are coming to “take charge of Him” and take Him home, and put a stop to His ministry of preaching and healing. Mary and her other children are Jesus’ family. There are some important points to be made about Mary, because she is such an issue in the division of the Church into denominations. As you know, the Roman Catholic Church ALMOST advocates the worship of Mary. They have officially pronounced that she was born without sin (the Immaculate Conception). She is the “Perpetual Virgin.” She ascended into Heaven without dying (the Assumption). She is the “Co-Redemptrix” of mankind, sharing in purchasing our salvation, by the pain in her heart when Jesus died. Her statue is carried in parades all around the world in Catholic countries. She is praised millions of times every day as Roman Catholics recite a prayer to her in the saying of their Rosary beads. And there are many other prayers to Mary.
Later in Jesus’ ministry Mary believed in her son as being God’s Messiah. She was at the foot of the cross at His crucifixion. She was one of the Marys who came to the tomb. She was with the disciples in the upper room on the day of Pentecost. But she never was what the RC Church makes her out to be. She is not a perpetual virgin. She was not the Mother of God. She was not conceived without sin. She was not taken bodily into Heaven without dying. She is not our Co-Redemptrix. She is no one we should pray to. It’s good to be clear about Mary, lest we fall into the sin of Mary worship, which is common around the world.
God is not only generous, but righteous and just.
Let’s not forget that just a few verses later, Christ changed Peter’s name to “Satan”.
Surely you don’t believe Satan is the rock of your church.

Of course Satan is not the Rock. Peter was not Satan either. He was merely listening to Satan at the moment. The Catholic Church Never said that the Pope NEVER listens to Satan. He listens to him just as we all listen to Satan at times and commit sin. We Know Peter sinned. We know our Popes sin. It seems to be that the Protestants are the only ones who don’t know this.
