Abraham, like all the patriarchs, offered the sacrificial lamb. Throughout all history, the only means of salvation has been through sacrificial bloodshed—never through what humans can achieve.

Abraham was instructed by God to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on an altar (Genesis 22). It was an enactment of the plan of salvation, God showing the world His method of dealing with sin. As Abraham was about to kill his beloved son, God supplied the sacrificial animal Himself. This predicted in type that God would give His own Son as a sacrifice.
      Source: Flickr.
Abraham’s willingness to obey God displays a faith that could move mountains. He knew God had promised that salvation would come through His and Isaac’s seed (Genesis 21:12). Abraham knew that even if he should offer Isaac, God would have to raise him from the dead to fulfill His promise (Hebrews 11:17-19). Abraham knew that God would never lie. In Genesis 22:5, Abraham says to his companions, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you” (NKJV).

Do we have that kind of unshakeable faith in the Word of God? No wonder the Bible says in Galatians 3:8 that the Gospel was preached unto Abraham. No wonder Christ referred to Abraham’s faith when He said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day [by faith he saw the day of Christ’s sacrifice as the Lamb of God], and he saw it and was glad” (John 8:56).
Abraham was saved by faith in the Son of God, but this did not free him of the obligation to keep God’s law:
Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws (Genesis 26:5).

It was on Mount Moriah that Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his beloved son. It was on Mount Moriah that Solomon built the temple and where the altar of burnt offerings stood. And it was at the northern edge of Mount Moriah, at the place called Golgotha, where the Son of God laid down His life.

    • gemmea says:

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). When John the Baptist saw Jesus approaching, this is what he proclaimed. So what does it mean that Jesus is the Lamb of God?

Lambs play a major role in the Old Testament sacrificial system as well as in Messianic prophecy. Exodus 29:38-46 describes the twice-daily sacrifice of year-old lambs. God said, “It shall be a regular burnt offering throughout your generations at the entrance of the tent of meeting before the Lord, where I will meet with you, to speak to you there” (Exodus 29:42). The offering of the lamb symbolically atoned for the sins of the people so that they could commune with God. Jesus’ sacrifice does the same for us. The writer of Hebrews says, “But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant” (Hebrews 9:11-15a). It is Jesus’ blood that atones for our sins and restores our relationship with God. It is because of His death and bodily resurrection that we can meet with God and hear Him.

We see a foreshadowing of Jesus as the sacrificial lamb in the story of Abraham and Isaac (see Genesis 22:1-14). Abraham took his son to Moriah, at the instruction of God, with the intention of sacrificing him. When the boy asked where the sacrificial lamb was, Abraham replied, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son” (Genesis 22:8). Abraham was prepared to offer his child to God, but God stopped him from so doing and supplied a ram to be sacrificed instead. On a greater scale, God provided the Lamb for us – His own Son. Only the sacrifice of God is truly sufficient for our atonement.

Jesus is also referred to as the Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7). The Passover is described in Exodus 12. The first Passover occurred during God’s deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. The angel of death passed over Egypt and killed the firstborn sons. However, the Israelites were instructed to kill a lamb without blemish, wipe the lamb’s blood over the doorpost, and stay inside (eating the lamb and unleavened bread in haste). When the angel of death saw the blood on their doors, he passed over, thus sparing the firstborn of the Israelites. Passover was to be memorialized each year as a feast that lasts seven days. In essence, the lamb is the protector of the Israelites and also seen as the atoner for them. It is because of the blood of the lamb that they are spared death. It is because of Jesus’ blood that we are spared (spiritual) death. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). We are “covered by Jesus’ blood” and therefore are spared death and given life. Interestingly, Jesus’ crucifixion occurred during Passover.

Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament sacrificial system. He became the once-for-all offering for our sins (Hebrews 10:1-18). Jesus being the Lamb of God also refers to other prophecies regarding the Messiah. For example, Isaiah 53:7 says, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.” Jeremiah 11:19 is a similar passage.

In short, Jesus as the Lamb of God is a sacrifice for our sins in fulfillment of the Old Testament sacrificial system. It is by His sacrifice that our communion with God is restored and by the covering of His blood that we are spared spiritual death.

Fr. J. even as a Catholic I could never figure out the purpose of the rosary. I think all the ones I attended we seemed as if we were just repeating the words to get through as quickly as possible.

Even if prayed “properly” how do you”square” the rosary with what the Bible says about praying in vein repitition?

    Blessings to you,

  5. Fr. J. says:

M54, as the Rosary is a prayer experience, how about you pray it as best you can every day for a week, then we can talk about it. Before you begin, ask Mary to help you to pray it, understand it and receive the grace that the Lord most desires you receive from it. How’s that?

Yes, Mary, we really are a Christian site. What is the article about? Well, did you read it? What of our blog have you actually read?

We don’t take sides in politics here generally but we do call out some of the cultural things – the tendancy to laud BO as messianic in the media has become too silly not to challenge.

Just curious, are you from one of the Lutheran sects that supports abortion rights? I know the ELCA actually has a health plan that will pay for it… I had rather hoped that the “conservative synods” were more conservative still.

Stop by often, we have only one Messiah, Jesus Christ, here too.

    Dear Friends,

Can you enable a reader to select texts from various posts and move them to the WP file in order to comment or quote from them, while writing a draft post which also requires a spell check before being posted? As the things stand now one has to print a copy, scan it to the WP; or go from the WP to the post in considaration, backwards and forwards, all the time, which is time consuming and subject to errors.

    Thanks

  14. Hit “ctrl +A” for select all, then “ctrl +C” for copy, and copy and paste what you were interested in…

You will have to clean it up a little for the extraneous text included, but it does work!

  15. Michael says:

Thank you; I knew it when putting the question. But it should be possible to set up a simlper procedure, because just a minute ago I was able to do it with sections of this particular Post. And know it from previous occasions too, with other posts of your Blog. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. And when it doesn’t, usually with new comments – it seems, it is discouraging.

When it does, I use the left click to selelct, and the right one to copy. I have never encountered difficulties with other blogs on the Internet.

    I am curious why.

  26. Happy, for more on the daily life of Abouna Antonio, check out his own blog:

    http://journeywithfriends.blogspot.com/

All of the stuff published here was reprinted from there. The run was experimental, to see how the content would fit with TBC… But as well written and as interesting as many of them were, the tone of the posts – that of a daily diary of a Lebanese priest in the mountains – simply did not seem to fit with the tone of the other content. This is not to say that it was not well written… If anything, having his posts of daily pastoral care alongside hagiography, social commentary, news tidbits, apologetics, and a porpouri of popery did a disservice to his writing.

We like Abouna here, and have plans to run some of his stuff in the future. He is, it should be noted, still a full contributor… News of the shrine he is (re)building will be included in future posts. Keep an eye out here AND his personal blog.

Thanks again for your comment. We are enjoying your own contributions very much!

I can easily see the great good work you are doing. Here’s a suggestion. In the Washington Post (usa) a column appears titled “On Faith”. In truth, there is nothing but heresy against the Church spewing forth from thi column. You, having the wherewithall to deal with such matters should answer the column that profane CHurch teaching. Many of us are answering these crude articles but th Black Cordelias seem better suited than us. Thanks

Friends, This is a little off the regular, but I had a question.

As I travel with my family, we are trying to visit Cathedrals (large and small, famous or not) as we go.We are putting a scrap book together. The locals have better suggestions of ones to visit. I would love to have some suggestions!

    Thanks for your help!
    God bless all,

  30. John says:

    Happy,
St. Peter in Chains, Cincinnati, and St. Michael’s in Toronto, both have wonderful music and an excellent, traditional liturgy. If you really want something more traditional, Old St. Mary’s in Cincinnati has German, Latin, and English Masses every Sunday, the Latin is Novus Ordo with chant and Renaissance polyphony. If you’re in the area, you will want to check out in New York Corpus Christi Church (the parish where Thomas Merton converted to catholicism), where they also have a beautiful liturgy, and extraordinary music.

  31. Nan says:

    Ally, where are you going?

  32. happy says:

Thanks John, we like it all!!

Nan, No place in particular. We have several places we have to be this year, so we could perhaps visit close to where we are.
We live in Texas and have a place in NM. We have been and will be in that area, Colo. Louisianna, Utah, CA and Arizona. We will be in Kansas City later this year. Possibly Boston and Washington DC and Ohio and Florida in the next few years.

We have visited the spiral staircase in Santa Fe which is the Loretto Chapel I believe. St. Francis of Asissi also in Santa Fe. Several in Colorado. Very beautiful! We just thought it would be fun to kind of always make it a point to visit one or more on each trip!
    Thanks for the info!
    Have a wonderful weekend!
    Ally

  33. happy says:

BTW, the spiral staircase is a neat story if you are not familar with it!

  34. Joel says:

    Ally,
You can go to the National Shrine if you end up in DC. The pictures of it are beautiful. That is where my dad had his first communion. Nice place.

  35. Make a special effort to visit the Eastern Catholic Cathedrals if you can. The Maronite Cathedral of Saint Louis is rather interesting and a true education on a lot of levels. It is modern, but the elements incorporated are rather striking… Not the least of which are the glass curtain walls on the north and south sides that have the interesting effect of bringing the outdoors IN, by having glass walls that are open to well kept flower gardens on either side, with the Stations of the Cross on the brick “fence wall” that closes up the negative space.

Plus, if you mention you are friends of Father J and I, you might get invited into the rectory for a cup of coffee and some Lebanese pastries!

If in Ohio, do not miss the Byzantine Cathedral in Parma or “OL, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary” (aka “Holy Rosary Cathedral”) in Toledo. It is the only Mozarabic cathedral outside of Spain, and the mosaics are amazing.

  36. Dave says:

If Jesus as an embryo was omniscient could he in any sense of the word be fully human? The problem here of course is trying to rectify what it means to be “fully
human and fully divine” at the same time. By definition what is divine and what is human are mutually exclusive.

  37. bfhu says:

Dave Jesus was fully human and this humanity was joined to Divinity hypostatically. Jesus was NOT merely human. He was GOD-MAN.

  38. Nan says:

    Ally,

    The Faithful Traveler
might have some info for you. There’s a link to Diana’s blog, which has info on places they’ve scoped out. The Locations page has links to churches and shrines.

  39. Dave says:

    Dear bfhu,
Let me restate the problem I have and where it came from. In the essay,”When Did Jesus Know He was God?,” it is stated that Jesus was omniscient, or all knowing, as an embryo. How then do you explain that he did not know when the end of days would occur? (Mark 13:30-32)Also see “Catechism of the Catholic Church” 472: “this human soul that the Son of Man assumed is endowed with a true human knowledge. As such, this knowledge could not in itself be unlimited: it was exercised in the historical conditions of his existence in space and time. This is why the Son of God could, when he became man, ‘increase in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man,’ and would even have to inquire for himself about what one in the human condition can learn only from experience. This corresponded to the reality of his voluntary emptying of himself, taking ‘the form of a slave.'”
This essay is contrary to the teaching of the church and the New Testament. It creates a quagmire.
I hope the author rethinks his/her position.

  40. happy says:

Friends, thanks so much! I have tried searching this on the net and usually come up with Cathedrals all over the world. Although I would love to visit those, that is probably not going to happen! We have found the smallest, sweetest little chapels and then some spectacular ones! I will add your suggestions to my list.
    Many thanks!

  41. Dave says:

    Dear bfhu,
I should would like to hear back from you. I have spoken to several Catholic scholars and they tell me that the churches position is that they really don’t know when Jesus, on a human level, realized he was the Son of God.

  42. Roland Newark says:

Say, not so fast. I have a copy of “Brideshead Revisited” of course and play it. How very unfortunate that my copy has been “cut” and the very profound exchange between Ryder and Cordelia is missing, this gross transgression simply destroys the film. But, again where Cordelia describes those for whom she is praying after she describes Olive Banks, she also mentions the name (it escapes me) of her pet pig. Now here’s the pitch, if the Black Cordelia’s have and can send to me at the following address the CD of Brideshead with the whole and entire scene, I’ll be happy to return much more than five Bob. Thanks, ever so.

Hi, I have a question. Of, course I am converting, so I don’t know much. Today is May 21 and I am showing it as a holy day of obligation. I got home from work to check our parish for Mass times and it doesn’t exist. So I checked all the other Catholic Churches and there is no Mass for today.(Some had some regular 12 or morning Mass) No special 6 or 7 Mass for today. Is that unusual or am I crazy?

    :) Thanks!

  46. Robert says:

    happy,

    Where do you live?

The lamentable practice of switching Ascension Thursday to Ascension Thursday Sunday is nearly ubiquitous in the United States of America. Unless your diocese is one of the few hold outs then the obligation for Ascension Thursday is fulfilled with your Sunday obligation. It seems that Boston, Hartford and New York (according to a quick internet check) are the only dioceses in the US which still keep the traditional, biblical date.

Being a New Yorker, I attended a lovely sung Mass in the extraordinary form today. What a treat!

    God bless,

    -Rob

  47. Robert says:

Besides, how many countless Catholic school kids are missing out on a venerable tradition? Given that I often got the holy day of Ascension Thursday off in my many years of Catholic education (being in New York), and also given that it often coincides closely with Memorial day, a quasi-holiday often appeared on the Catholic school radar– “Extension Friday.” After all, it’s not really worth coming in for that lone day in the middle…

My mother is a very strong Lutheran of the ECLA. With that being said I have chosen the Catholic Faith worked on with the the National Evangelization Retreat Teams which are charasamatic I also taught at a Catholic school under the Dominicans for 2 years (Province of St. Joseph). Myself being very liturgical not so much into that movement. I object to the hatred and condensending comments towards OUR current president. He is trying to help all of us with free health care there is nothing whatsoever in his remarks in fact he speakes against it that abortions will be funded let alone the ludicrious remarks that euthanasia will be perpetuated. Give me a break I have risked my live several times for your freesom Finally someone does something that supports all of us and you hate him for it. You wouldn’t know Jesus Christ if he came up to you in fact you would slap him in the face as a loser and let him die in the streets. I’m really embarrased by this side of my compassionate inclusive Church.

    • Sgt,

I am sorry you feel that way. I do have every confidence that a Marine – the toughest and finest our Republic produces – can handle it. Happy Birthday, BTW, a day early.

  57. Nan says:

Laws are interpreted based on the words on their face. If abortion is not specifically excluded, the law may be interpreted to include it.

When there’s talk of health care rationing based on age, euthanasia is a legitimate concern. These aren’t lies.

The President speaks against abortion but immediately upon taking office funded abortions in other countries. Look at his actions, not his words.

The problem here is not that we hate the president but rather that we don’t trust his history, his advisors or a Congress that wants to pass bills without anyone knowing their contents or questioning the policies therein.

Prayer for families is the very foundation that keeps a family unit together. Have you heard the phrase “A family that prays together stays together”? The concept is true – a family that has their focus on praying to the Lord Jesus Christ has a foundation that may be shaken at times, but it will withstand all that comes against them.

  59. Deacon Rick says:

How can I get a copy of the picture of the Vietnamese martyrs? (Bishop of Tokin ?) I want several copies since we also have some Vietnamese seminarians down here. You don ‘t by chance happen to know where I can get a picture of Cardinal Nguyen Van Thuan also?
    Thanks, and God bless, Rick

  60. Clark says:

You say catholic doctrines do not change. Since the beginning, the RCC has stated that salvation is only found inside the RCC. The council of Trent declared anathema to those who are outside of roman catholicism. Now however, your church is saying that anyone with a good conscience can be saved, including Jews, muslims, etc. If you don’t believe this, I encourage you to listen to the debate between catholic monsignor Ed Jordan and Christan Rob Zins.

  61. erik says:

You say the Jews believe in purgatory. That however, is irrelevant since the Jews rejected Christ and the entire New Testament.

    • It is only irrelevant if it is the case that post-Temple Judaism came up with it as a post-Jesus innovation. In fact they did not.

This belief in which they have held too pre-dated the coming of the Messiah.

  62. Father M.J. says:

I’d like to know the story behind the picture on your masthead. The little girls in Sisters’ habits are dressed like the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate from Joliet, Illinois, who were my teachers back in the 50s, dressed until June 1, 1959, when they changed to a brown collar made out of the same material as their habit and a more streamlined and formed veil that was utterly beautiful…

    • I do not know the story behind the photo. I rather liked it because it was a wee bit whimsical, hopeful, and demonstrates a fondness for a piety that – even if imperfect – the world could use a little more of.

      • Anonymous says:

I guess I was wondering where you found it if it isn’t your own picture originally.

    Why Carry a Gun?

My old Grandpa said to me, ‘Son, there comes a time in every man’s life when he stops bustin’ knuckles and starts bustin’ caps and usually it’s when he becomes too old to take a whoopin’.

I don’t carry a gun to kill people; I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m evil; I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the World.

I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government; I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m angry; I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone; I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man; I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate; I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don’t carry a gun because I love it; I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police protection is an oxymoron: Free citizens must protect themselves because police do not protect you from crime; they just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I’m too young to die and too old to take a whoopin’!

    A LITTLE GUN HISTORY

PLEASE DON’T THINK FOR A MOMENT, THAT THIS COULDN’T HAPPEN IN OUR COUNTRY ALSO !!!!!!

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control:

From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
    ———————–
In 1911, Turkey established gun control:

From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
    ———————–
Germany established gun control in 1938:

From 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
    ———————–
China established gun control in 1935: From 1948 to

1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
    ———————–
Guatemala established gun control in 1964:

From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
    ———————–
Uganda established gun control in 1970:

From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
    ———————–
Cambodia established gun control in 1956:

From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
    ———————–
56 million defenseless people were rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control.
    ———————–
You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

With guns, we are ‘citizens’; without them, we are ‘subjects’.

During WW II, the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!

Gun owners in the USA are the largest armed forces in the World!

If you value your freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message to all of your friends.

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense.

  104. chuck haddad says:

Greetings: Asking for your community’s powerful prayer support for Chuck: Asking for complete, radical, all pervasive, ever deepening, permanent: healing of every fiber and cell of the damage inflicted on my soul over so many years that have contributed to rendering my soul to be so incredibly vulnerable and susceptible to devastating, sleep depriving, frightful spiritual oppresion and incredible most intense sensual temptations that plague my mind, thoughts, and fire my desires. For many many many long years now I have had incredible onslaughts of things that: bite me, tear at my soul, rip and claw me [I kid you not on thing as I have seen these things]. All I can tell you is that I experienced a lot of psychological childhood abuse when growing up and I believe and am convinced that this is one of the results of such things. What all of these onslaughts have done is to render my soul incredibly vulnerable to even more spiritual oppresion [day and night]; Let me tell you the following: 1) I am middle aged; 2) I am well educated, 3) This is not my imagination; 4) I am a solid Catholic and very devoted to Mary, the Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth; 5) I am very committed to the sorrows of Mary rosary, 6) I am very committed to the prayers of St. Brigid; 7) All of the spiritual oppres-ion is wearing me down further and further–I know exactly what the purpose is: it is designed to draw me into the depths and darkness and death of perversion and sensual death. Please, please, please, please, please–I ask for strong community prayers for healing and for infinite oceans of God’s wisdom, guidance, direction, help and assistance in the spiritual journey and important choices and decisions I must and need to make throughout my entire life if I am to grow to be the man God will be able to delight in and get into Heaven and help many souls here on earth and in Purgatory. Thanks so much for your prayers for both Chuck and Sally.

  106. Raphael Gonzalez says:

Prayer Request …. Dear God, I have been asking for people’s help to pray for my family just so you can hear our suffering. We are being harassed, bullied and harmed for the past 3 years now. It has been very bad because besides hurting my family they have been breaking things in our cars because they know we barely have any money to get by and they know it hurts my whole family to get things repaired. They have been doing this on and off. They want me to do something for them which is not within my powers and I know is wrong and will get my family in trouble. I’m so tired of being stressed everyday just waiting for them to mess with my family again. Either someone gets hurt or we have to spend money to get something fixed. The situation is so complicated that the only thing I can do is pray to God for help. My mom just went back to work 2 weeks ago after not being able to for 7 weeks because of what they did to her. Now they are hurting her again but not as much as before. My uncle too just had a car accident caused of them and he’s still recovering from a heart surgery. They even mess with our dogs. There is no part of my life that they leave alone and I live in fear everyday. I don’t know what to do anymore. I believe that if this request reaches a lot of people that can help me pray maybe my prayers can be heard. If it’s not to much of a bother please let me know if you got my email just so I know my request reached someone. If you can’t, that’s ok. Thank you.
