202 years ago today, the Holy See established three new dioceses of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. The Baltimore diocese, already in existence, was elevated to the rank of archdiocese; and a fourth new diocese was established in Bardstown (now Louisville), Kentucky, for Catholics on the frontier.

Upper Marlboro, MD, January 8, 1735; d. Baltimore, MD, December 3, 1815. Archbishop Carroll was laid to rest in the Cathedral Basilica’s crypt.
