On This day in Catholic History

202 years ago today, the Holy See established three new dioceses of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. The Baltimore diocese, already in existence, was elevated to the rank of archdiocese; and a fourth new diocese was established in Bardstown (now Louisville), Kentucky, for Catholics on the frontier.

John Carroll – Head of Baltimore See from November 6, 1789 – December 3, 1815. First Bishop of the hierarchy of the United States of America, first Bishop and Archbishop of Baltimore. b. Upper Marlboro, MD, January 8, 1735; d. Baltimore, MD, December 3, 1815. Archbishop Carroll was laid to rest in the Cathedral Basilica’s crypt.
