Blessed Mary Frances Schervier

Roman Martyrology: At Aachen in Germany, Frances Schervier Blessed Virgin, who long worked in the city caring for the poor, the sick and afflicted and founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Poor St. Francis to meet the needs of the needy.
She was born in Aachen in Germany, Jan 3, 1819, the goddaughter of the Emperor Francis II, then his noble subject. At 13 she was orphaned; her mother Eloisa Migeon, taken from Miss to engage in relief of the poor, teaching them catechism, as they continued in this meritorious work, in an often indifferent, sometimes hostile environment, Frances Schervier spare no fatigue, without fear, she found support in Apostolic enterprise and welfare, in the parish vicar of her father ISTAS.
After withdrawing at Liege in Belgium, Oct 3, 1845, together with five companions she formeda welfare group in Aachen, which was opportune, because of an epidemic of cholera and smallpox raging in the city.
She must give a canonical form to the nascent institution, so she wrote a rule that is affiliated with the Franciscan spirituality, under the protection of s. Francis with the primary purpose of charity, poverty and works of mercy for the poor.
The new congregation, which took the name of ‘Sisters of the Poor of s. Francis’, was approved by Pope s. Pius X in 1908; meanwhile October 12, 1850, Mary Frances and her sisters, issued their religious vows, but their institution spreading rapidly; already in 1858 had been founded a house in the American State of Ohio, while in others areas of assistance they saw the sisters committed during the wars of 1864, 1866 and 1870 devoted to health care in military hospitals and then to the recovery of youth traviata.
Mother Mary Frances Schervier died on December 14 ,1876 in Aachen, about 58 years, because of her reputation and fame of her holy life, the clergy urged the city to begin the cause for her beatification on February 28, 1928.
In 1970, the congregation had 121 Properties in Germany and the United States with approximately 1700 sisters, Mother Schervier was beatified on April 28, 1974 by Pope Paul VI.
